EMA: Past Life Martyred Saints (2011)

A borítót látva rögtön előítéleteim lettek: itt egy énekesnő aki a saját monogramját hordja a nyaka körül, jobbkezének feltartott mutató- és középső ujjából árad a fény...mi lesz ebből? A most 22 éves Erika M. Anderson bemutatkozó albumának zenei anyaga azonban eloszlatja a sötét felhőket. A saját magát digitális média-művésznek és gitárpusztítónak aposztrofáló fiatal hölgy hangja és dalai valamiféle (túl) korán szerzett érettségről árulkodnak. Ki tudja, talán az egyetlen,  2007-ben megjelent 'Red State' c. ominózus lemezével kétes hírnevet szerző majd 2010-ben megszűnő Gowns tagjaként kapott egy életre meghatározó impulzusokat...  Akárhogy és akármiért is, a Past Life Martyred Saints mocskos-folkos-lofis-pszichedelikus-nojzos zenéje és EMA sokszínű, a kislányos dalolástól a rekedt, szétcseszett torkú punk énekesnőn át a suttogásig megszólaló hangja így együtt gondoskodnak arról, hogy minimum ígéretesnek nevezzük a művésznőt.

Looking the artwork of 'Past Life Martyred Saints' gave me doubts and worries; young girl with her own initials around her neck, her right hand pointing upwards a-la Jesus Christ projecting light...what could this be anyway? Well, the music on 22-year old Erika M. Anderson's debut chases all the shadows of doubt away. EMA describes herself as a digital media artist and guitar destroyer. She certainly has a taste for raw guitar sounds (and happens to like good ol' vintage Fender Mustangs, Jazzmasters, etc...).  But what really strikes me is her far-too-mature sounding voice. I mean she sounds way out of her age. She sounds experienced, in life, that is. Maybe it's her time with the now defunct Gowns that brings all this out of her, I don't know. 
I also like how EMA plays around with her voice which wanders from girlish singing to the punk-rock singer with a worn-out throat while it has a lot of other different colors and tones in between to offer. Impressive, really. This and her dirty-psychedelic-noise-experimental-folk combo make her debut a lot more that promising.
