Psychologist: Waves of OK - EP (2011)

Ezt a rövidke albumot hallgatva akaratlanul felmerült bennem a kérdés, hogy vajon a Psychologist néven alkotó Iain Woods a gyógyító, vagy ő maga az, aki terápiára szorul. Különleges és egyéni utakon járó zenéjében sok minden találkozik, ezért meg sem kísérlem az elektronikus, experimentális, dark ambient, chillout, post-rock, stb. stílusjegyeket felvonultató minilemezt kategorizálni. Woods - sokszor remekül egymásra rétegzett - fájdalommal teli hangja mintha segítségért kiáltana. A 'Waves of OK' bő negyedórája úgy nagyszerű, ahogy van, mégis muszáj kiemelnem az EP-t nyitó instrumentális 'Together Clinging' c. darabot, mely egyszerre hátborzongató és gyönyörű, illetve a záró 'Song to the Siren' c. feldolgozást, melyet eredileg a Cocteau Twins által ismertté vált, csodás hangú Elizabeth Fraser énekelt az egyik This Mortal Coil albumon, úgy 25 évvel ezelőtt. Woods nem énekli jobban, mert Fraser-t nem kell  és nem is lehet lepipálni. Viszont  maga módján ugyanolyan zseniális az ő előadásában is ez a fájdalmasan szép dal. Ezt külön köszönöm neki. Remek album, megy a 'Best of 2011' csoportba.

While listening to this short and brilliant EP, I asked myself whether it's Iain Woods offering therapy or is it him in need of help. I'm having thoughts like this because of the sorrow and pain Woods' unique voice tends to project. Woods has been around as the Psychologist for a good while creating tracks in several genres but with 'Waves of OK' he is giving us something truly special and music he's never really  done before. For me it would be impossible to put his most recent work in any category as there are traces of ambient, post-rock, experimental, chill-out, just to name a few. All this on a 15+ minute long album. Still, the end result is nothing short of extraordinary. Like I said a few lines ago, this album, to my ears at least, is primarily singing about sorrow and Woods sounds to be perfect in this. The five atmospheric tracks on 'Waves of OK'  are equally great, yet my favorites are the opener 'Together Clinging', a hauntingly beautiful instrumental, and the closing 'Song to the Siren, the cover of a This Mortal Coil song from like 25 years ago. The original version was sung by former Cocteau Twins-fame Elizabeth Fraser and she did it wonderfully. Woods does not try to beat Fraser to it yet his performance, in his own special way, is as perfect as that of Fraser. Thanks to Mr Woods for this. What a great EP ! Goes straight on to my 'Best of 2011' collection.

Clams Casino: Instrumental Mixtape (2011)

Végre egy újabb zenei stílus, aminek megtanulhatom a nevét: 'based'.  Az elnevezés Lil B (alias Brandon McCartney), kalforniai rapper találmánya. A lexikonokban nem található bőséges magyarázat a zsánerről, de jónéhány blogban vesézgetik a témát. Annyi kiderül, hogy ennek a dolognak Lil B a királya és leginkább valamiféle ösztönös, bevállalós-bevallós- előjövős rap/hip-hop zenét akar jelenteni . Meg aztán ez elvileg egy olyan új, rapper körökben használatos szó, mely a melegkultúra iránti nagyobb nyitottságot, illetve szimpátiát hivatott kifejezni. Bármi is legyen az igazság, bármilyen is legyen a Clams Casino mögött álló 23 éves Mike Volpe nemi identitása, jó zenéket varrt össze a magánkiadásban megjelentetett  Instrumental Mixtape-en. Ha nem rágták volna a számba, hogy ez 'based music', akkor azt írtam volna ide, hogy ezek jó kis hip-hop alapú, witch house/drag hatásokban és mindenféle hangmintákban bővelkedő sötét, többnyire mocskos hangzású zenék. Egyebek mellett Björk és Adele hangját is bedolgozta trackjeibe Volpe, melyekre semmiképpen nem húzható rá egy átlagos hip-hop címke. Mindenesetre én megnyomtam a Lájk gombot.

Another music genre that I learned about today: 'based music'. After a little reading here and there one can find that this genre was invented by Berkeley, Calfornia-based (oops, 'based' again...)  rapper Lil B (born Brandon McCartney) and that it is supposed to mean some unconscious, brave, instinctive 'coming-out' type of rap/hip-hop music . Apparently 'based music' may be associated with gay hip-hop producers, at least that's what I was able to find up on the web. Whatever the truth is, 23-year old Mike Volpe who is behind Clams Casino is rolling out some fine tunes on his Instrumental Mixtape. Too bad we're told this is 'based music' because if I was to say what Clams Casino is, I'd say it's dark and, most of the time, real dirty hip-hop with some witch house / drag vibe to it that uses loads of cool samples from several sources. Among others we can hear the voices of Bjoerk and Adele. Nice reworks and retouches. Pretty atmospheric stuff and that's what I care about, not Volpe's sexual identity. All in all, I hit the 'Like' button.

'First in Love, Then in Peril' - részlet az Április 3-án  az A38-on adott rövidke live set-ből. Ez a track a Worldy című albumon lesz rajta, ami május végén jelenik meg online. A helyszínen brutálisan jól szólaltunk meg, itt a mix kevésbé ütős, de azért átjön belőle valami. A doboknál Gábor Andor barátom.

First in Love, Then in Peril - excerpt from the April 3 live set @ A38. The sound at the venue was HUGE, here the mix is less impressive but has a little kraft left  in it.  The drums are handled by my friend Andor Gabor. This track will be featured on 'Worldy', clipondildo's 2nd full-length album, going online as a free release in late May.     

Hallásvizsgálat / Welcome to audiology

Cyclo: id (2011)

Aki még nem találkozott kizárólag elektronikus zajokból kreált, de (helyenként) mégis ritmikus zenei alkotással, ne keressen tovább. Az NDK-s születésű Carsten Nicolai és a Párizsban alkotó japán Ryoji Ikeda összedugta a fejét, illetve inkább elektro-kütyüjeiket és Cyclo név alatt elkészítették az id című albumot. Az anyag befogadása közben kifejezetten  hallásvizsgálaton éreztem magamat a jobbról és balról változatos formában és frekvenciákon érkező, a füleimet igencsak megkínzó szinuszhullámos hangok, sípolások, csippanások miatt. Az első hallásra véletlenszerűen egymásra dobált elektronikus zajok sokszor között ütemekké állnak össze, de ne aggódjunk, a két audiovizuális művész nem poplemezt csinált. Hardcore kísérleti munka ez, csakis haladóknak.

Have you ever come upon a record composed entirely of electronic noises, glitches, sine waves and beeps? Well, look no further, this is it.  Audiovisual artists Carsten Nicolai (born in East Germany, he's better known by his works as Alva Noto) and Ryoji Ikeda (comes from Japan, lives in Paris) have just released their mutual effort under the Cyclo moniker. Listening to these, to some extent, ear-killing tracks was not easy and most of the time I felt like I was undergoing some audiology test. It's the pure glitch-beats that made me remember time to time that I was actually listening to a music album. Which does not happen to be your everyday pop number. This, ladies and gentlemen, is hardcore experimentalism on a highly advanced level. Handle with care.

College: Northern Council (2011)

Ismét francia import, a termék ezúttal is minőségi. A College a harmincas éveinek elején járó, Nantes-ból induló de már jóideje Párizsban alkotó David Greiller projektje. A frissen megjelent 'Northern Council' jó példa arra, hogy kizárólag szintetikus szekvenciákkal is lehet nagyon szerethető zenéket készíteni anélkül, hogy a hallgató füle elfáradna, vagy esetleg unalmában elaludna. Puritán, tiszta elektronika. Trés bien!

French import and premium product, again. College is the moniker of the thirty-something old David Grellier. Born in Nantes, the young Parisian has been creating some pretty good tunes for well over a decade now. 'Northern Councile', his fresh full-length album is a great example of how pure synthetic sequences can be presented in a highly loveable way. This music won't be hard on one's ears, neither it will make you fall asleep. Merci David, trés bien !

We Are Enfant Terrible: Explicit Pictures (2011)

Ezek a francia fiatalok nagyon tudnak valamit. 8-bites elektropop tömény Nintendo hangulattal, szépíteni nem érdemes, nem is kell. Ez az album egy energiabomba, üresjáratok nélkül. A lille-ből valósi Clo(tilde) Floret, Thomas Fourny és Cyril Debarge triója nem óhajt franciázni: angol nyelvű dalaik könnyedén hódítanak az USA-ban is, ottani turnéjuk épp most fejeződött be, jelenleg az öreg kontinensen adnak kraftos koncerteket, sajnos hozzánk ezúttal sem jönnek...ami azt illeti 2008-as debütjük óta egyetlen koncertszervezőnek sem sikerült őket elhoznia, pedig jártak a környéken. Kár, mert nagyon jók.

These young folks from France gotta know something. Their pure 8-bit electropop is packed with energy. 'Explicit Pictures' is their debut and a pretty good one. No boring moments, just krafty songs with a cool Nintendo vibe to them. Lille-based Clotilde Floret, Thomas Fourny and Cyril Debarge are not your typical ambassadors of French pop music. What they do is highly international, trendy and capable of crossing oceans. Their USA tour is just over and these days they are having fun at several European venues. Too bad that non of these is in Budapest because I like this trio a lot.

Bohren Und Der Club Of Gore: Beileid (2011)

A  BUDCOG idestova 20 éve készíti sajátos hangulatú, az avantgard jazz és a (dark) ambient határait magabiztosan oda-vissza átlépő albumait. A 'Beileid' a német kollektíva hetedik sorlemeze, mely három igen hosszú ( 7 - 14 perc játékidejű)  kompozíciót tartalmaz. Olyan zenék ezek, mintha a Swans '95-'97 tájékán készült súlyos, de az ambienttel a maga módján kacérkodó és nem mellesleg maratoni hosszúságú szerzeményeit kísérletező jazz-zel oltották volna be.  Mindezzel együtt kifejezetten élvezetes és hallgatható, sőt többszörösen újrahallgatható albumot rakott le az asztalra a főleg kopasz urakból álló német kvartett. Vielen dank !

BUDCOG have been around for nearly 20 years with their idiosyncratic music that finds no difficulty in crossing borders between avantgarde jazz and (dark) ambient. 'Beileid', their 7th full-length album has 3 lengthy tracks (7 - 14 mins.) to offer.  To my ears they sound like '95-'97 -era Swans injected with a few doses of experimental jazz.  All that resulted in a highly enjoyable BUDCOG album that happens to have a strong re-listen potential. These serious-looking (and mostly bald)  four German gentlemen created some truly amazing music, again. Vielen dank ! :)

The Weeknd: House of Balloons (2011)

Íme kérem egy sok tekintetben remek debüt album, mely mögött nem áll semmilyen kiadó, mégis pár hét alatt sikerült a független zenéket hájpoló közönséggel megszerettetnie magát. Van benne egy kicsinyke witch house, sokkal több kicsavart RnB, sampling, looping, töredezett ütemek, hallucinogén hangulat. A torontói projekt vokáljait Abel Tesfaye követi el, nem is rosszul. A zenékért Doc McKinney és Illangelo felelnek. Ki tudja hogyan és miért, de működik. Az album jelenleg is ingyen tölhető le a a The Weeknd weboldaláról. Le is kell tölteni, izibe.


What we have here is a pretty darn good debut album by the Toronto-based The Weeknd. 'House Of Balloons' was self-released, no label is involved. Nonetheless, the trio is already in the underground music news, even Pitchfork reviewed the album and gave a really high mark and awarded it the 'best new music' title. Not because Pitchfork tells us, but in its own right this album is truly great.  To my ears it has a little witch house/drag vibe to it but primarily this some seriously twisted RnB with cool samples and loops. Abel Tesfaye's vocals perfectly fit in the murky world of The Weeknd while Doc McKinney and Illangelo are in charge of the music and sound. Debüt / My first-ever live act

Az A38 által szervezett Talentométer tehetségkutató alkalmából - melyre még januárban neveztem be lesz, ami lesz alapon - ma sort került az első clipondildo live-set -re. Óriási pluszként ott volt mellettem a színpadon Andor barátom, aki dobbal és ütőhangszerekkel vastagította tekintélyesen a ritmusszekciót. Remekül sikerült ez a röpke 20 perc, Andor nélkül nem lehetett volna ilyen jó, bár azért nem fikázom a zenémet, hiszen Andor pont azért szállt be ebbe a - per pillanat még - nem fizetős buliba, mert tetszik neki ami alkotok. 

Érdekes volt a - magam részéről - sok évnyi dobolós koncertek után elektronikus zenei kontextusban egy notebook-kal és egy midi kontrollerel színpadra lépni. Bitang jól szólaltunk meg, erős volt a végeredmény.  Négy alkalommal tudtunk próbálni, az összes beválasztott tracket újra kellett építeni az élő verziókhoz. Megérte, májusban megyünk a középdöntőbe. Külön jól esett, hogy a zsűríben elnöklő Dj Palotainak kifejezetten tetszett amit csináltunk. A többi fellépő legtöbbje bejött nekem, de leginkább a monoscope nevű egyszemélyes projekt, aki ugyan nem jutott tovább, de a helyi szervezőknek is tetszett annyira, hogy fellépési lehetőséget ajánljanak neki. Nagyon helyes. Vele még fogok valami közös zenélést csapni, mert jó a zenéje és szimpatikus a srác is.  Májusban középdöntő, de nem merül ki ebben az élő zenélés, még legalább 5-10 live set -et tervezek idénre. 

Today with my electronic-experimental (these days I like to call it looptronica) music project named 

clipondildo had the first-ever live act.  The A38 team (note to anyone who's planning to come to Budapest and likes good music: make sure you pay  A38 a visit, it's one of the best live music venues in Europe..and it's actually a boat on river Danube..cool! )  announced a talent search in January that I entered on a "don't care what happens" basis. Then I was selected  for the first round of semi-finals and today it happened: we went on stage and had a hell of a good time. We, because my friend Andor who happens to be a pro-drummer and percussionist told me after Eiga was released that he liked my music a lot and would love to join me in live-sets.  Today we had 20 minutes to show the jury what we are capable of but everything went very well. The sound was huge and strong.  The set worked out great and the folks, including the jury loved it. Without Andor this could not have happened the way it have so I'm ever grateful to him for putting his efforts and uber-cool grooves in taking my tunes further. Further, that is. May 8 is the next level as we made it to the 2nd round of semi finals. And we don't stop here. I'm planning to have 5-10 more live acts this year. 

I liked most of the other contenders today, especially a one-man project called monoscope. This guy is making some really cool and promising music. He didn't make it to the 2nd round but some guys at the boat liked his music enough to ask him to play on A38 in the near future. Right on, he's good and cool. I will be doing a co-lab with him, that's a fact.

Ra Calium: Walkabout (2010)

Álmodozó, melankólikus, úszkálós, reverbes, lassú tempójú elektro-dreampop, mely kicsit kacérkodik az loop/sample alapú experimentális zsánerekkel is. Olykor Brendan Perry jut eszembe, de ez azért nem Dead Can Dance, de a Ra Calium-ot jegyző Anthony Engelhardt nem is akar az lenni.  Nem különösebben felkavaró, mégis kellemes hallgatnivaló. Borongós napokhoz passzol.

Dreamy, melancholic electro-dreampop with loads of reverb. One can spot traces of loop/sample-based experimentalism on Ra Calium's (a.k.a. Anthony Engelhardt  2010 EP  At points Brendan Perry comes to mind, but this is not Dead Can Dance and it doesn't want to be. Maybe it's Engelhardts vocals.. Anyway, not an overly exciting album, still good enough for overcast days like today.
