Ma reggel a hetesen / This morning on nr. 7

Braids: Native Speaker (2011)
A kanadai, egészen pontosan Calgary-i kvartett debütáló albuma szólt ma füleimben miközben munkába  zötyögtem a hetesen. A 'Native Speaker' dalai a hangjából sokat, időnként szerintem túl sokat is kihozni képes Raphaelle Standell-Preston vokáljait ágyazzák be kellemes, sokrétegű, úszkálós elektro-akusztikus textúrákba.

Riding to work this morning I had 'Native Speaker', the debut album by Calgary-based quartet the Braids playing in my ears. The, to some extent, experimental dreampop tracks spend more time in the ambient realm than in the beat-centered electronic world but the outcome is definitely promising. The tracks feature heavily layered textures built around Raphaelle Standell-Preston's powerful yet aetheric vocals. Raphaelle's voice is truly great and she handles it pretty well, tough sometimes she tends to be a little too much for this music. At some point point her performance reminded me of Nika Roza Danilova (a.k.a. Zola Jesus) and this could be a compliment, but it does not really fit in the music on 'Native Speaker'. As far as I can hear, the Braids have yet to find their own signature sound and need a little more time to hone their songwriting, but like I said, they are definitely worth the attention. They can be awesome one or two albums later.

College: Northern Council (2011)
Ismét francia import, a termék ezúttal is minőségi.

French import and premium product, again. College is the moniker of the thirty-something old David Grellier. Born in Nantes, the young Parisian has been creating some pretty good tunes for well over a decade now. 'Northern Councile', his fresh full-length album is a great example of how pure synthetic sequences can be presented in a highly loveable way. This music won't be hard on one's ears, neither it will make you fall asleep.

Dreamy, melancholic electro-dreampop with loads of reverb. One can spot traces of loop/sample-based experimentalism on Ra Calium's (a.k.a. Anthony Engelhardt  2010 EP  At points Brendan Perry comes to mind, but this is not Dead Can Dance and it doesn't want to be. Maybe it's Engelhardts vocals.. Anyway, not an overly exciting album, still good enough for overcast days like today.
