Metronomy: The English Riviera (2011)

A Metronomy egy ideje köztünk van már, úgy jó 12 éve dolgoznak, ugyanakkor az áprilisban megjelenő English Riviera csak a harmadik lesz a saját szerzeményeket tartalmazó albumok sorában. Ebből a szempontból nem túl termékenyek a srácok, remixben viszont annál erősebbek. Főleg az alapító-frontember Joseph Mount. Rajta kívül per pillanat Anna Prior, Oscar Cash és Gbenka Adelekan tagja a formációnak.
Az English Riviera egy nagyon decens elektro-experimentális-pop album lett. A fiú vokálok erősen idézik Tunde Adebimpe-t a TV On the Radio-ból, és egyenek mellett ezért is emlékeztet engem a Metronomy a méltán híres brooklyni csapatra. Nem koppintás, inkább majdnem olyan jók ők is. Az a kicsi különleges valami azért hiányzik, de mindentől függetlenül jó volt járni egyet az angol riviérán.

Metronomy have been around for a good while as Joseph Mount started this project back in '99 in Devon.  At this time his band mates are Anna Prior (a girl on drums! - now that's something I've always digged), Oscar Cash and Gbenka Adelekan. As far as original works are concerned, the guys were not that prolific all these years as English Riviera is only their third proper release. A very good one, though.  The vocals on the album much resemble that of Tunde Adebimpe from TV On The Radio and in general, when listening to English Riviera it's the famed Brooklyn band that comes to mind. I'm not saying Metronomy is a TVOTR knock-off. No. They are almost as good as TVOTR, without that special little something. All in all, it was really nice walking on the English Riviera this morning.

clipondildo: Worldy - new album out in May

Lassan befejeződik kis projekt-stúdióm upgrade-je. A Macbook Pro és az Akai Pro MPK 25 kontroller már pár hete megvannak, ma pedig megrendeltem a Zoom H1 kézi recordert. Ez utóbbi leginkább ahhoz kell, hogy - elsősorban Budapest utcáin és közterületein - mindenféle zajokat, hangokat, zenéket rögzítsek. Ezekből aztán loopok és hangminták készülnek majd és az év második felére áll össze a BUD című projekt, mely szeretett városomban felvett hangokon alapul majd. Elsőszámú célpontjaim az utcazenészek lesznek. Ezzel párhuzamosan két album vár utómunkálatokra, ezek májusban jelennek majd meg rövid egymásutánban. És még van egy csomó ötletem, csak győzzem idővel.

The upgrade-process of my compact project-studio is nearing completion. I've had the MacBook Pro and the Akai Pro MPK 25 controller for a few weeks now. Today I've bought a Zoom H1 handy recorder from ebay. With this I'll be doing field recordings, primarily on the streets of my beloved city, Budapest. Think street musicians, they are my main target this time. But any sound or noise that I like will be recorded. I'll process these later into samples and loops for a future project I titled BUD. I also have two albums to complete. All tracks are laid, mixing and mastering are yet to be done. Both are scheduled for release in May. I have a number of other ideas, all I need is plenty of time.

Gold Panda: Companion (2011)

Gold Panda (szül.: Derwin Panda) már az áttörést hozó Lucky Shiner előtt is meglehetősen aktív volt. Sajátos sample/loop világának formálódásából ad remek ízelítőt a Companion, mely a Ghostly International jóvoltából az első három Panda EP-t (Quitter's Raga, Mayuri, Before) tartalmazza. Ezek a szerzemények még 2009-ben születtek, de már megelőlegezeik a Lucky Shiner csiszoltabb gyémántjait. Az már más tészta, hogy nekem jobban tetszenek a Companion csiszolatlanabb darabjai. Egyebek mellett jó kis indiai / ázsiai hangminták vonulnak az album trackjeiben és mindettől válnak számomra szerethetőbbé ezek a darabok.

Before Ghostly International released Lucky Shiner last year a put Gold Panda on the music-map of the world,  this highly talented young artist (born Derwin Panda) had been honing his skills for some time and, among several 7 inchers, released 3 EP's in 2009. Thanks to Ghostly, now all the three (Quitter's Raga, Mayuri, Before) were re-released under the title Companion. Many folks say that Lucky Shiner is the real deal and no doubt, it's a fine album, but I, for some reason, like the uncut diamonds of these earlier EP's better. Maybe it's those indian / asian samples, I don't know, but I love Companion so much.

Human League: Credo (2011)

10 év után új albummal rukkolt elő a new wave egyik nagy túlélője. Philip Oakey korához képest jól néz ki, táncoslánykái is egész jó formában vannak, a Credo viszont egy vicc. 11 ötlettelen track, a szövegek kimerítik a közhelyparádé fogalmát. Jobb lett volna, ha a Human League a saját örökségéből építkezik, ehelyett azonban megkísérelték a tehetséges fiatal zenekarok által divatba hozott '80s revival-t meglovagolni és csúfosan elbuktak. Egy valami azonban nem változott: Philip Oakey hangja még mindig könnyen felismerhető és kellemetlen.

 After ten years Philip Oakey and his babes are giving us a new Human League album. Well, to make this really short, Credo is a joke. A bad one. 11 tracks totally lacking any original ideas, the lyrics are packed with clichés and stock phrases. As far as I can hear, what Human League intended to do was capitalize on the '80s synthpop revival brought on by talented young bands (think La Roux and co..). The problem is that Credo fails, big time. Maybe Oakey should have redefined his own heritage by making true hits like Don't you want me baby was 30 years ago. Anyway, one thing is still the same: Oakey's voice. It's still as unpleasant and weak as it used to be. The only HL-signature item that remained.

Fabulous Diamonds

Őket még tavaly ismertem meg. Experimentális - pszichedelikus - free jazz duó  (Nina Venerosa, Jarod Zlatic) Melbourne-ből. Többnyire hosszú, repetitív számokat készítenek és elég  rosszul énekelnek. Elvileg ettől meg kéne őrülnöm, de nem, nekem ez tetszik. Itt van egy pár koncert videó tőlük. Nincs nagy hírverés körülöttük, ezért gondoltam megemlékezem róluk itt.

The Fabulous Diamonds and I crossed paths last year. This Aussie duo creates highly repetitive lengthy psychedelic-experimental-free jazz tracks, accompanied by some pretty bad singing. All this should make me run away but no, I happen to like what they do. There's not much hype about them so I thought I'd post a couple of videos from their live performances.

Younger Brother: Vaccine (2011)

A Younger Brother magját Benji Vaughan és Simon Postford (ismerős lehet a Sphongle és Hallucinogen nevű projektekből is) alkotják.
Kellemes, könnyebben emészthető, egészen kismértékben kísérletező, popos-pszichedelikus elektrót játszanak. Akusztikus dob és gitárok egészítik ki a formulát. Az énekhang számomra - sajnos - a Coldplay istentudatú Christ Martinját juttatja eszembe; modoros és maníros. Hmm. Vajon bekerül a 'Vaccine' is a szerintem legjobb 2011-es albumok közé? Nem.

Younger Brother was formed by Benji Vaughan and Simon Postford (also active in Sphongle and Hallucinogen) back in 2005 (or was it 2003?). What I primarily hear on their brand new effort is some easily digestible electro-based psychedelic pop with hints of indie rock and experimentalism. Vocals remind of Coldplay's divine Chris Martin and this is not a compliment. Will 'Vaccine' make it to my Best of 2011 list. Nope.

Sister Crayon: Bellow (2011) 

Remek kvartett Kaliforniából, mely eredetileg a fantasztikus hangú Terra Lopez énekesnő egyszemélyes projektjeként indult 2007-ben. De aztán megérkeztek a fiúk (Dani Fernandez, Nicholas Suhr, Jeffrey LaTour) és most itt a debütáló album. Sötétebb tónusú, lassú-közepes tempójú dalok sorakoznak rajta, melyek kiválóan egyesítik a hagyományosabb (dob, gitárok) hangszerelést az elektronika (hangminták, szintik, ütemek..) világával. A Sister Crayon zenéje számomra épp olyan különleges hangulatú és titokzatos, mint amilyet a dániai Under Byen készít. A Bellow is simán ott lesz 2011 legjobbjai között.

Sister Crayon was originally a solo project started by Terra Lopez in Sacramento, CA in 2007. Then the boys (Dani Fernandez, Nicholas Suhr, Jeffrey LaTour) joined in and here we have their first full length release. And what a great album this is! On 'Bellow' the more traditional (drums,guitars,etc.) arrangements meet the best of electronic stuff (samples, beats) and the result is an awesome record. The tracks have a dark tone to them, they are either slow or mid-tempo, but pack lots of craft. And Terra has a hauntingly beautiful singing voice. For some reason, to my ears Sister Crayon sounds as mysterious and unique as Under Byen, my nr.1 favorite from Denmark. All in all, 'Bellow' has already won its place among 2011's best albums.

Silk Flowers:  Ltd. Form (2011)


Szélesebb tömegek által is fogyasztható mértékben kísérletező elektro-trió New Yorkból. A vokálokat elkövető Avriam Cohen dörmögős hangja kifejezetten felüdülés a sok színtelen, 'egykaptafa" férfi énekhanghoz képest, amik elektronikus zenei projektekben manapság oly gyakran felcsendülnek.
Jók ők is, de a Seekae által okozott katarzist nem közelítik meg.

This NYC-based trio is giving us some great electronic tracks with an absolutely tolerable level of experimentalism. Frontman Avriam Cohen's deep singing voice stands out in the plethora of dull male voices in the realm of electronic music, it adds a lot to the whole Silk Flowers picture. Great music, though not as great as Seekae.

Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra: The World Of Funk (2011)


Úgy látszik most nagyon jó szériát fogtam ki az új zenékből, mert a veterán multiinstrumentalista Shawn Lee zenekarának legfrissebb albuma is remek hallgatni való, muszáj is volt rögtön kétszer abszolválnom.
Több világ találkozik az albumon, de leginkább az délkelet ázsiai / latin kettősség dominál. Vérbő, experimentális, funk, world music, acid jazz, pszichedelikus hatásokanyag ez, egy pillanatra sem unalmas. Nem is annyira titkos összetevőként van benne egy nagyon egészséges  " '60s-'70s crime suspense " fíling is, ettől még jobban szeretem ezt az albumot. Újabb Top 2011 esélyes.

Another entry to my  Best 2011 albums collection. Shawn Lee's freshest full length album is truly unique, to my ears at least it is. This is some full-blooded funky with lots of experimental, world music, acid jazz and psychedelic flavors. I have enjoyed every second of this album.  And there is some '60s-'70s crime suspense coolness to it which makes it even more exciting. Awesome music.
